Peeling paint. Cold brick walls.
A smarter exterior finish.

A cold solid-brick home, masonry paint that repeatedly cracked and flaked, and a narrow rear passage that made a bulky insulation build-up difficult. At this Kings Norton property, ECOPROCORK SLICS™ spray cork was applied over prepared masonry to create a fresh finish while keeping the brick pattern visible.

Cold solid walls. Failing paint. Limited room.

ECOPROCORK’s project account describes a solid-brick social home that felt persistently cold, with black mould reported inside. Its existing masonry paint repeatedly cracked and flaked, leaving the exterior looking tired.

The narrow rear access passage made added depth an important consideration, particularly where wheelchair access was needed. A thick board-insulation build-up would have occupied more of an already constrained route. A slim sprayed finish was selected for the prepared masonry.

Prepare the brickwork. Apply the cork finish.

The project used SLICS™ spray cork over prepared masonry. Loose and failing existing material was scraped away and the surfaces cleaned. The supplied photographs show preparation, masking around windows and doors, and spray application across the brickwork and passage.

Adhesion and flexibility were central to the choice after the recurring paint problems. The manufacturer’s sprayed-cork datasheet reports adhesion and elongation test results. For a new installation, assess and repair the substrate and follow the selected product’s preparation instructions. The surface should be dry, clean and sound before coating.

A fresh finish. A delighted tenant.

The completed photographs show a consistent light textured finish at the front, rear and passage. The coating follows the existing brickwork, leaving its pattern and architectural details visible.

ECOPROCORK reports that the tenant was delighted with the result. This is feedback relayed through the project account, rather than a direct quotation. The photographs document the exterior finish; measured indoor temperatures, energy savings and a post-installation mould assessment have not been supplied.

A slim cork coating and a thicker insulation-board system serve different specifications. Installed thickness and the complete wall build-up determine the thermal contribution. Explore cold-wall options and compare systems before choosing.

Peeling paint and cold brick walls: your questions

Why is my masonry paint peeling or flaking?

Moisture, poor adhesion, an unsound existing coating or movement can contribute to paint failure. Assess the cause before choosing a new finish. At Kings Norton, loose material was removed before spray cork application. Dulux’s guide to paint problems →

Can spray cork go over brickwork or peeling paint?

This project shows spray cork over prepared masonry, retaining the brick pattern. Loose or failing paint must be removed and the surface assessed. Suitability depends on preparation, repairs and specification.

Why are my solid brick walls so cold?

Uninsulated solid walls can be a source of heat loss. The appropriate upgrade depends on the complete wall, moisture condition, available space and required thermal improvement. Read the cold-wall guide →

Why does black mould keep coming back?

Recurring mould needs assessment of moisture sources, condensation, heating and ventilation alongside any wall treatment. Read the mould guide →

What if thick insulation would narrow my passage?

Space was central to the specification. Where wheelchair access is required, measure and confirm the final clear route width. Photographs alone do not establish accessibility compliance.

Will spray cork stop cracking or flaking?

Adhesion and flexibility are relevant properties, but service depends on the substrate, preparation, detailing and specification. Structural movement or ongoing defects need to be addressed.
