Paint, TLICS or a wider insulation upgrade?
This article answers the paint-selection question. For a sound wall with an agreed remedial plan, compare the coating’s substrate requirements, preparation, coverage, finish and safety documents. The DECOCORK guide and technical sheet help you prepare those questions.
If the brief needs a thicker internal cork treatment, discuss the TLICS specification route. If heat loss is the main objective, compare internal insulation options using the complete wall rather than a paint label. For growth that keeps returning, use the recurrence checklist before buying another finish. Ask which route fits your assessed wall and include photographs, existing coatings and investigation results.

Choose the investigation before the paint
Mould indicates moisture conditions that need attention. Condensation may contribute, but leaks, penetrating damp and other defects must also be considered. A decorative or anti-mould paint is not a substitute for resolving the cause.
What surface treatments can do
Cleaning and a suitable coating may form part of the remedial plan, but product claims and directions vary. Do not assume that all anti-mould paints have the same ingredients or performance. Avoid repeatedly covering visible growth without investigating recurrence.
Considering DECOCORK
DECOCORK is a cork-based paint option to discuss for a sound, compatible surface. Check its technical and safety documents, preparation, coverage and application conditions. It should not be presented as a guaranteed mould cure or as equivalent to a thicker insulation upgrade.
Thermal and moisture questions
Ask what evidence supports any expected surface-temperature contribution for the specified paint thickness and existing wall. The total moisture strategy includes ventilation, heating and necessary repairs. “Breathable” does not mean moisture can safely pass through every existing paint, plaster or wall.
When a wider plan is needed
For persistent, extensive or unexplained mould, obtain a competent building assessment. A trowel-applied cork route or other insulation option may be considered after assessment, with an appropriate complete design. Do not select a membrane or insulating skim solely from the visible severity of the staining.
Prepare a useful enquiry
Send photographs, the location and construction where known, symptoms, earlier repairs and any investigations. Use the paint guide and technical documents to prepare questions. Retail availability and product terms should be checked directly at the time of purchase.
